#BookReview ; A Home For Urvashi by Sanchali Bhattacharya

Death separates Dulari from her beloved twin sister, Ujjwala. Forlorn, her spirit remains on Earth as a powerless but constant companion to Ujjwala. Like the apsara Urvashi, she has the power to travel between worlds but no family, no one to love.

Dulari has a dream: she hopes to be reborn as Ujjwala s daughter and find a home for herself. Twenty-nine years have gone by, but her dream remains unfulfilled. There is hope, though, for Ujjwala has a son and now longs for a daughter.
Then arrives a man from Ujjwala s past. His presence upsets her life and sets into motion a series of events that threaten to destroy her completely. Only Dulari can save her sister, but to do that, she must relinquish her dream. Will Dulari intervene and protect Ujjwala, or will she wait and watch? Will her endless longing for life and belonging overpower the love she has for her sister?

A Home For Urvashi is a fictional novel about sisterhood written by Sanchali Bhattacharya & published by Harper Collins. The author is an electrical engineer from Jadavpur University & is the director of her own engineering & manufacturing company. Her short stories have featured in The Statesman. She is also the author of a novel titled Ashes & Roses.

The story revolves around twin sisters Dulari & Ujjwala, where Ujjwala has taken birth on the humane world Dulari keeps an eye on her sister through the spirit world. Dulari follows her sister & worries for her all the time, on the other hand Ujjwala has no idea of her sister’s existence. Dulari dreams to be together with Ujjwala by being born as her daughter & she patiently waits for the opportunity. After going through some hardships in her life Ujjwala finally has a loving family including a 3 year old child & plans to have another child. Dulari gets excited as this is her moment to be born as her sister’s daughter but then a man from Ujjwala’s past comes back into her life who knows a bit too much. Only Dulari can save her sister but that would mean she would’ve to sacrifice her dream. Will Dulari make the sacrifice? Will she be able to save her sister? Get the book here to know,
I wanted my last read of 2017 to be something special hence I was struggling to pick up any book, so when I decided to read A Home for Urvashi I was keeping my fingers crossed. I haven’t read enough books which celebrates or lays emphasis on the strong bond of sisterhood but I am glad that this one really did explored it. The story has been written beautifully with the situations written in detail. The author’s command over her words is admirable. The title is quite apt but honestly I didn’t liked the cover. I would recommend everyone to read it. A great read to end 2017.

Thank you Writersmelon & Harper Collins for the review copy.

In the year 1355 BCE, the land of Egypt was the superpower of the known world. King Tut's father, Akenaten, the so-called 'heretic pharaoh,' and his wife, Queen Nefertiti, are on the verge of catapulting Egypt into a revolution that will forever divide its people and rip the most powerful empire on the earth from its foundation.

Inspired by the actual Hittite and Amarna letters of 14th century BCE, 'Valley of the Kings: The 18th Dynasty' is an epic novel of intrigue, passion, and betrayal, resurrecting the thrilling story of a singular leader whose beliefs were both visionary and disastrous.

#BookReview ; Flying Without Wings by Rishabh Puri

For Milli Bajwa, life is at a stand-still. Grounded in the Chandigarh airport where she works day after day, she watches flights leaving for destinations she knows she'll never visit. Loveless and luckless, she would rather bury her nose in a book than face her grim reality. And then, on a whim, she swipes right on a new dating app, and finds the man of her dreams - someone who can sweep her off her feet and teach her how to fly. But the mysterious and charming Karan Singhania has secrets of his own, and a heart damaged in more ways than one. This is the story of two people about to find out how far they're willing to go for the promise of true love.

Flying Without Wings is the second book of writer-entrepreneur Rishabh Puri & has been published by Harper Collins & Black Ink publishers. The author is an entrepreneur of Indian origin with business in Nigeria, Dubai & China. He is also an avid traveler & a supercar enthusiast. He is based in Lagos, Nigeria but visits India regularly.

The female lead of the book is Milli Bajwa, a small town girl who works paycheck to paycheck & the male lead is Karan Singhania who is from an affluent family. Even though their worlds are totally different, they come close to each other through a dating app but as we all know life is never that simple. With the tragedies Milli has gone through & the secret that Karan has, will it be a happy ending or will it never work out? Get the book here to know,

Reading romantic books has never been my forte mainly because they tend to lean towards being cheesy, hence I hesitated to pick up this book but thankfully it didn’t turned out to be one of those. The language is simple hence made it an easy read, the cover is beautiful & the title is appropriate too. Even though the story was okay on its own, I felt it lacked some depth hence I couldn’t completely indulge myself into it. A quick breezy read.
Thank you Harper Collins for the review copy.

A story of revenge and redemption and deeds shaped by forces that humans believe they have defined through mythology and scriptures but still struggle to understand.

A woman employee of a retirement home is shocked to discover that a new resident is in fact the son impersonating his father. The son is seeking revenge. She, by her past actions, is unwittingly complicit in his being there and now tries to thwart his peculiar plans. A senile woman-resident and an enigmatic founder offer him sage advice. The samudra manthan (a major episode in Hindu mythology), a slightly dim secretary and a sinister boss play their part in ensuring justice is finally served but in an unexpected manner.

The novel quotes frequently from the ancient Hindu scriptures and stories that the protagonists use to justify their actions. The treatment of the elderly in society is a major theme.

‘I found Rajiv's novel completely charming. The story is always interesting and is funny and moving by turns. It has really original elements with its setting and his use of the Hindu stories. I think it is such a good novel and with such appealing characters. I loved it!’ - Rebecca Smith, author of 'The Jane Austen Writers' Club'.

About the author

In Rajiv Mittal's own words:

"I was born in Chennai, India in the early nineteen sixties. I am an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and a CPA from Australia. I now live in Melbourne after a stint of several years in the Middle East.

Writing was a vague aspiration. It became reality thanks to a stranger who said I reminded him of the main character from Desiderata by Max Ehrmann. He quoted from it, ‘Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.’"

Meet Dipa Basu. She’s a 30 something modern Bengali woman living in Kolkata and a successful writer. After many relationships and breakups, she’s decided that love is a waste of time. She’s always had these phases where she’s been obsessed with different things; like one where old men in dhotis appealed to her. But this time she’s crazy about men with British and Australian accents. She travels to Singapore for a few days, on a quest to have a fun, meaningless fling. Her trip is full of surprises. Will Dipa have her Singapore Fling?

Read an excerpt:

I woke up as the plane landed with that comforting thud. I grew up with that thud. It’s a welcome – and a reminder that a long hot shower isn’t too far away. So I grabbed my suitcase with crazy anticipation in my system because this trip was all about a good change. It was my chance to set things right in my boring 30 something year old life. Romantic love was overrated. I’d had enough of that crap. Time for some unemotional fun. The girls had attempted to analyse me saying, “Dipa, you are sensitive, emotional, and all about feelings. Are you sure about a fling?” I was sure. Sure I cried during most movies. Yeah, I couldn’t stand animal cruelty or injustice to the poor. But this was meant to happen.

#BookReview ; The Goat Thief by Perumal Murugan

Perumal Murugan is one of the best Indian writers today. He trains his unsentimental eye on men and women who live in the margins of our society. He tells their stories with deep sympathy and calm clarity. A lonely night watchman falls in love with the ghost of a rape victim. A terrified young goat thief finds himself surrounded by a mob baying for his blood. An old peasant exhausted by a lifetime of labour is consumed by jealousy and driven to an act of total destruction. Set in the arid Kongu landscape of rural Tamil Nadu, these tales illuminate the extraordinary acts that make up everyday lives.

The Goat Thief is the latest book by celebrated author Perumal Murugan, translated into English by N. Kalyan Raman & published by Juggernaut publishers. A master storyteller, Perumal Murugan has written award-winning novels, short stories & poems. He is also a professor of Tamil language & literature & a beloved teacher. His best known work is Maadorubagan (One Part Woman) that attracted fierce controversy along immense acclaim.

This book is a collection of 10 short stories, each with riveting subjects which will surely intrigue every single reader. It starts with The Well where the protagonist went for a leisure swim with some kids but things take a wild turn in an unexpected end. The second story The Wailing of a Toilet Bowl is the story of an innocent newlywed bride who hails from a village but has moved to the city to live with her husband. As she tries to settle in the new environment, there are a couple of things which troubles her & her husband isn’t much of help either instead he instills another fear which proves to be deadly. To read more such stories which will surely get your jaw dropped to the ground, get this book here RIGHT NOW!

It has been quite some time since I’ve read a translated work & I’m so glad that I got a chance to review this book as I have been planning to read a book by Perumal Murugan since ages & I get why he is so famous. All the 10 short stories are different in their own way, the author’s ability to change a simple story into something so riveting that you won’t be able to keep the book down. The translator has done an exemplary job which can’t be ignored. The language is simple, the title in interesting & so is the cover. A must read!

“I often painted fragments of things because it seemed to make my statement as well as or better than the whole could” - Georgia O'Keeffe.

A serial killer on the loose who chooses a particular day of the month to kill his victims; a strained father-son relationship, when the father returns home after being presumed dead; a girl who can go to any extent for her career and money; a woman openly acknowledging the presence of the many ‘other women’ in her life; a lady's dark past finally catches up with her... Life is an ongoing sequence of events meshed with everyday mundaneness so that it becomes difficult to isolate them.

‘Fragments’ captures the essence of those parts of our lives that we are not proud to show to others. It takes you through a range of emotions and leaves a big question mark on what is supposed to be.
