#BookReview ; Mothering A Muslim by Nazia Erum

Nazia Erum runs a fashion start-up, and is the mother of an adorable little girl. But from the day Myra was born, she found herself asking questions she didn't have answers for. It began with her daughter's name – should Nazia choose a traditional Islamic name or a more non-religious sounding one so that her daughter couldn't be identified as a Muslim? Nazia was not the only modern middleclass Muslim asking this question. Soon she discovered that finding the right name for Myra was the least of her worries. Talking to over 100 children and their parents across 12 cities, what Nazia uncovers is deeply troubling. She heard stories of rampant bullying of Muslim children in many of the country's top schools, of six-year-olds being hit by their classmates because of their faith, of religious segregation in classrooms and of anxious Muslim parents across the country who monitor their children's dress, speech and actions to protect them. In Mothering a Muslim, she finally lifts the veil on this taboo subject, one that is spoken of only in whispers. Urgent, gripping and heartbreaking, this is essential reading for every Indian.

Mothering A Muslim is a non-fiction written by Nazia Erum & published by Juggernaut publishers. The author runs a fashion start-up called The Luxury Label. She lives in Noida.

This book starts with the author’s dilemma to name her daughter with a proper Islamic name or something generic as she was worried that the former one might attract undue bullying. With that thought in her mind, she decided to interview several Muslim families across different cities from different strata of society. This book talks about the real stories of kids as young as from kindergarten to college going youngsters who face Islamophobia on a daily basis & how its affecting their lives & temperament. It also focuses on a key aspect within the Muslim community where some people are on a constant mission to judge other’s way of practicing Islam. This book surely sums up what’s going wrong in our society & forces you to think about how to improve the situation. Get your copy here,
As the title of the book says, this book is mainly about the difficulties Muslim parents face when their children get bullied at school for being from a particular religion & the helplessness they face regarding this problem as sometimes even the school authorities fail to help. It also talks about how the parents keep their children under check so that these incidents won’t push them towards a wrong path. The author fearlessly explores all those topics which we all know they exist but we don’t address them. This book is surely a need of the hour & an important read of our time. The language, title & cover is on point. Definitely a must read.

#BookReview ; The Tree Bears Witness by Sharath Komarraju

Barely a month has passed since the royal wedding of Emperor Akbar to the legendary Jodha, when the new queen’s brother, Sujjamal, is found murdered in the palace gardens.
With his honour and reputation at stake, Akbar asks his trusted advisor Birbal to solve the mystery. The murder has taken place in a garden, at a spot between two mango trees, and the two guards who are eyewitnesses have conflicting versions of what could have happened. Was it suicide? Was it Akbar himself who ordered the killing or was it the Rajputs who accompanied Sujjamal, his uncles and cousin, who are guilty?
Set in a period that has been described as the golden age of the Mughals, the novel draws us into the royal court of Agra, abuzz with political intrigue, personal enmities and hidden rivalries, where everyone is a suspect until proven otherwise.

The Tree Bears Witness is a historical fiction written by Sharath Komarraju & published by Westland Books. He is an author of fiction & nonfiction based in Bangalore, India. His best known work to date is the Hastinapur series, in which he speaks into the silences of the Mahabharata story through the voices of the epic’s many women characters. His first novel, Murder in Amaravati was longlisted for the Commonwealth Book Prize, 2013.

The story is set during the golden era of Mughal dynasty under the leadership of Emperor Akbar. Few weeks after Akbar got married to Rajput princess Hira Kunwari to form an alliance between the Rajputs & Mughals, the newlywed queen’s brother, Sujjamal is found dead at the palace gardens under mysterious circumstances. With the alliance in danger & the reputation of Mughal dynasty under radar, Akbar seeks help from his favorite courtier Mahesh Das AKA Raja Birbal. As he investigates he finds out that the body was found between 2 mango trees & the 2 guards who witnessed the act had no idea whatsoever how & who could’ve done the deed as they didn’t saw anyone else near Sujjamal. Follow Birbal’s quest to find the invisible murderer & get the book here,
This time as I started my 2018 reading goal, I made sure that I would only read books which will truly interest me & I’m glad that I picked up this one as my first read of the year. I was quite excited to read this book as I have heard good things about the author from several readers as well in the past. The story has been written extremely well, where the author has succeeded to help the reader picturize the scenes according to the chapter. The thrill to find the killer kept me hooked up till the end & made it difficult for me to put the book down. The language used is very easy, the cover is beautiful & the title can’t be any better. A must read!

I wanted my last read of 2017 to be something special hence I was struggling to pick up any book, so when I decided to read A Home for Urvashi I was keeping my fingers crossed. I haven’t read enough books which celebrates or lays emphasis on the strong bond of sisterhood but I am glad that this one really did explored it. The story has been written beautifully with the situations written in detail. The author’s command over her words is admirable. The title is quite apt but honestly I didn’t liked the cover. I would recommend everyone to read it. A great read to end 2017.

Thank you Writersmelon & Harper Collins for the review copy.
